about

Chicago based, singer and sound artist Davin Youngs returns with his second EP 'What if all?' recorded using only the sounds of his voice. Heavily inspired by themes of nondualism and Buddhist meditation practice, each track is based on Davin's unique experiences in meditation.

The title track, 'What if all?' specifically asks what it would mean to transcend the concept of "I" and uncover the possibility of unconditional love. Davin explores new sonic territory, using his voice to move the listener from intimate, internal questioning to expansive awe and wonder. Referenced is the mystery of an organ in a large cathedral, or the echo of a sacred choir in the distance, Davin's voice occupies a wide landscape and caresses the possibility of transcending and including.

Metta is the Pali word for Loving Kindness. Metta is a practice of using traditional phrases to first wish one's self well, a benefactor, someone who is neutral, someone who is difficult and then all living beings. This track is meant to explore the expanding and inherently warm nature of this practice. An ebb and flow perforate the experience of being wrapped in a warm blanket of loving kindness. Individual vocal lines are nestled quietly into the ever moving ocean of sound.

Tonglen is a traditional practice of breathing in the suffering of others to better understand, and filter the experience as one's own. This practice is quite powerful if not at times edgy and risky, implied in sounds of Davin's voice used in this track. The descending phrases are meant to mimic the sensation of exhaling, while the quality of the voice is quite strident and difficult at times. Just when the repetition seems to much, there are glimmers of hope of growth in the form of major chords. The competition between major and minor never quite resolves, but the conclusion is a settling of the two.

Finally, Karuna is the Pali word for compassion. Similar to Metta, the Buddhist meditation practice asks one to allow their heart to quiver in observation of the suffering of others. This awareness in turn informs how one might offer compassion to themselves. This track is a sonic wave of compassion, with moments of distortion and the emergence of melodic clarity. Davin's voice sinks into the wave, but makes itself known as guide through the experience.

While each track is quite specific with its reference, the overall experience can be that of the listener. A sonic hug, or a safe space for curiosity and wonder. All experiences are useful experiences in this unique terrain of sound.
